BTS scholar pledges to pay it forward

Carlo’s interest in teaching started early. “As a kid, I’ve always wanted to become a teacher to help children secure a better future for themselves.”

However, Carlo was at a crossroads in his life when he and his younger sibling were left under the care of his aunt, who also struggles to make both ends meet. He was feeling particularly discouraged about continuing his studies because of the lack of financial support from his family.

“I already told our pastor that I’ll quit my studies and instead, apply for a job in order to help my aunt. After all, the new learning setup demands a greater need for resources like internet and gadgets, so I cannot really afford to join the online classes,” Carlo said. “However, Pastor Ynes reminded me of my dream. She told me, ‘You always wanted to be a teacher, you should go do that. It’s not too late.’ Then she introduced me to Operation Blessing’s Back-to-School (BTS) Program.”

In that moment, Carlo decided to grab the opportunity to finish his studies.

“Through the scholarship BTS offered me, I would be able to continue my dream of education this academic year. So today someone does for me, tomorrow I will do for someone else.”

Carlo is currently taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education at Norzagaray College in Bulacan. His ultimate goal is to give back and help other children who come from a similar situation as himself.

Given the reality of the country, or even schools, in terms of digital divide, the best thing we could do is advocate for equitable access to online learning. Through our Back-to-School Program, we’re helping students sustain their need for long-term education by providing them a brand new or used but functioning laptop or tablet. One gadget can shape one student’s future!
